Ratings Forming Part of an Engineering Watch

an engine room shall demonstrate a minimum knowledge, understanding and proficiency.

Every candidate for certification shall be required to provide evidence of having achieved the

required standard of competence in accordance with the methods for demonstrating

competence and the criteria for evaluating competence specified in columns 3 and 4 of table

A-III/4 which shall include, but not limited the following:

• terms used in machinery spaces and names of machinery and equipment;
• engine-room watchkeeping procedures;
• safe working practices as related to engine-room operations;
• basic environmental protection procedures;
• use of appropriate internal communication system;
• engine-room alarm systems and ability to distinguish between the various alarms, with
• special reference to fire-extinguishing gas alarms;
• safe operation of boilers; maintain the correct water levels and steam pressures;
• knowledge of emergency duties;
• escape routes from machinery spaces;
• familiarity with the location and use of fire-fighting equipment in the machinery spaces.

• be not less than 16 years of age;
• be physically fit for duty as per required by Regulation I/9 of STCW-78, as amended
• and National standards;
• passed a special training, either pre-sea or on board ship, including an approved period
• of seagoing service which shall not be less than two months.
